There are many newsworthy dimensions to Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas. If you’ve followed the Holy Father’s homilies, catecheses, and public addresses, the broad direction of the document is not surprising.
Even so, I found myself genuinely astonished by the theological depth and architectural coherence of the text. What follows is not an attempt at a comprehensive survey of the document—I’ve had to set aside many fascinating threads to keep this essay readable—but a reflection on themes in the encyclical that I find especially noteworthy in light of my professional expertise and particular life experience.
